On August 14th The U.S. Department of Defense announced a new round of military sales contracts amounting to $62 billion, the maximum amount the U.S. has allowed foreign buyers to acquire in 10 years, including a contract with Lockheed Martin to build 90 F-16 fighter jets, 66 of which are on order from Taiwan. The big sale of military weapons to Taiwan comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and China, in addition to heightened tensions between China and Taiwan.
